About the Item
1960s oil on canvas view of the streets around Montparnasse, Paris by Osamu Komma 近馬 治. The painting is signed and dated bottom left and there is script to the back of the canvas. ミッドセンチュリーパリの油絵
A charming and atmospheric painting of the iconic streets of Paris from the 1960s. The cafes with their bright striped awnings, the colourful painted buildings with their high mansard roofs. Trees in leaf giving shade on the streets to the people going about their daily tasks and enjoying a coffee on a terrace. Osamu has used strong and confident brush strokes and a lively colour palette to create a very charming view of his beloved Paris.
There was a considerable cross influence between Japanese and French artists in the 20th century many of the former travelling to live and work in Paris and Osamu Komma was no doubt a part of this group. They included Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita and Takanori Oguiss.
Takanori Oguiss (Ogisu) 荻須 高徳 (November 30, 1901 – October 14, 1986) was a Japanese figurative painter.
He studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, before arriving in Paris in 1927 with several other Japanese artists and friends such as Tsuguharu Foujita and Sadami Yokote. He settled in Montparnasse where he frequented the painters of the Cité des Artistes de la Ruche, in particular Maurice Utrillo.
Throughout his career, Oguiss exhibited extensively often in the circle of Tsuguharu Foujita's.
Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (藤田 嗣治, Fujita Tsuguharu, November 27, 1886 – January 29, 1968) was a Japanese–French painter. After having studied Western-style painting in Japan, Foujita traveled to Paris, where he encountered the international modern art scene of the Montparnasse neighbourhood and developed an eclectic style that borrowed from both Japanese and European artistic traditions. Having worked there extensively in the 1920s Foujita returned to France in 1950, where he would spend the rest of his life. His influence on other Japanese painters in his lifetime was extensive and he may have known Osamu Komma.

- Mid-Century Oil on Canvas. Harbour scene. Farewell to the Fishermen.Located in Cotignac, FRMid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".Category

- Large Surrealist Oil on Canvas. 'She brought Colour into his Life'.By Frank DochertyLocated in Cotignac, FRLarge surrealist contemporary oil on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W, signed and dated bottom left and signed and titled 'She brought Colour into his Life' to the reverse. This piece whilst wonderfully colourful, playful and erotic is typical of the witty sense of humour this artist displays in all his work. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow , Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...Category

- Oltremare 6Located in Milano, MII am not afraid to define it as a metaphysical painting, - says Angelo Crespi - and right in the suffix "beyond" (in Greek "meta") also of the title "Oltremare" the intent to climb over the wall of the sensible and the real is revealed. There is another vein to which the new paintings of Nahmad refer and it is that of Romanticism, in the strong idea that art should represent the sublime, not the beautiful. The skies like John Constable, thick with purplish blue clouds (such as "Rainstorm over the Sea" of 1828 which anticipates by a century modernity), the stormy seas like William Turner, give the viewer the idea of infinity and vastness of nature compared to the finitude and misery of the human. If Caspar Friedrich...Category
