This rediscovered painting is a splendid example of Monamy’s work and also a very complex and detailed painting for this artist; furthermore, it is pretty early in his career for a work on such a grand scale. The scene depicts The Nore, the main fleet anchorage (in Monamy’s time) in the Thames estuary off Shoeburyness, near Southend.
The principal vessel in this painting is a so-called ‘first rate’ vessel, the largest type of man-o-War of that era and usually mounted with a hundred guns or so. She is clearly the flagship of this collection of boats and she is seen firing a ‘salute’ to honour the commanding Admiral. The Admiral can be seen sitting in the stern of the longboat being rowed towards the flagship with the intention to soon board. As there were no ‘official’ uniforms at that time, and senior officers wore what they liked, it is not possible to say which of the several figures in this row boat is actually the Admiral himself.
The Nore has been, and remains to this day, the site of a Royal Navy anchorage since the age of salt, being adjacent to both the city and port of London and to the Medway, England's principal naval base and dockyard in the North Sea. The Nore was a major hazard to shipping, so in 1732 the world's first lightship was moored over it in an experiment, the first one of its kind.
Peter Monamy
Peter Monamy was born in London in 1681, the youngest son of a Guernseyman. Trained originally in house decoration, Peter Monamy was probably largely self-taught as a marine painter. His style closely followed that of Willem van de Velde the younger.
Monamy was working after the van de Velde family and other Dutch painters, who had come to work in England, had heightened interest in shipping pictures and created a growing market for them.
He emerged with Samuel Scott as one of the two leading figures in the first generation of British marine painters, although his range of work is uneven in quality. He worked industriously for at least 40 years and left a wealth of paintings illustrating the nation's naval history and recording a wide range of ships of the first half of the 18th century.
In 1726, he was elected Liveryman of the Company of Painter-Stainers to which he presented a very large painting of the ‘Royal Sovereign at anchor’ which still remains in their collection. Although his paintings usually depict actual ships, they rarely record specific events as, up until 1739, his career coincided with a long period of peace.
