Artist: Roy McLendon Title: The Wetlands Medium: Oil on Upson Board Dimensions: Framed 28" x 44" , Unframed 24" x 40" In this work McLendon evokes darkening skies over this shadowy wetland. With skylight fading, the white egrets stalk under the overhang of the trees. The last spots of light in the clouds fall upon the marsh grasses, illuminating them and telling the viewer this is a Florida wetland. Some of the marks from the palette knives and brushes provides detail overhead in the changing skies. You can imagine this Highwayman painter at work in the Sunshine State. Artist Bio Roy McLendon is one of the enterprising group of Floridian men and one woman who travelled the East Coast of Florida, cruising A1A and US1 from Daytona Beach to Miami, selling their paintings from their car trunks, some with the paint still damp, for whatever the market would bear. Depicting Florida landscapes including beaches, marshes, swamps and rivers, highlighting flora and fauna, particularly birds, they painted their way from purely commercial to collectible, creating a unique chapter in Florida’s cultural history as they went. It began in the 50’s with a total of twenty-six individuals from Fort Pierce and surrounding areas creating Florida folk art under the art world radar. In 2004 culminated in Roy McLendon and the other Highwaymen’s induction into the Florida Hall of Fame and a museum named in their honor. McLendon was born in Pelham, Georgia in 1932 and moved to Delray Beach, Florida in 1946, to a small farm where the family earned a living picking beans. When he set out on his own in Miami, he worked as a dishwasher. Considered the second Highwayman, McLendon eventually moved to Gifford, Florida, where he met Harold Newton and began painting. McLendon is highly successful and runs a gallery in Fort Pierce with his son, Roy McLendon Jr., who is also an artist. Provenance: Private Highwaymen Collection
