About the Item

Wonderful atmospheric landscape titled "Reggel a reten" (Morning in the Meadow) by artist Wrabel Sándor (Austro-Hungarian, 1926-1992), 1979. Signed, titled and dated on verso and gallery sticker. Presented in rustic gilt-toned wooden frame. Image size: 17"H x 27"W. Framed size: 20"H x 29.50"W x 1.5"D. A reflection of his view of life and the world; vague and contorted in many ways. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts as the student of Pór Bertalan, he received his doctorate in Milan. He was sent to a labor camp to the Soviet Union in 1945. He painted a graphic series inspired by the Hungarian Revolution (popular uprising against Soviet occupation) of 1956. Later he represented all that devastation in his painting titled 'The Hungarian Golgotha'. He was harassed for decades. They tried to convince him to stay abroad. He could not work in Hungary. In the 60's he showed his works in Italy where he won several prices. He receive his doctorate in Milan. When in 1978 he was moved out of his house in Békásmegyer he moved to Pomáz. In Hungary, during his lifetime, he did not receive official recognition. In 2003 , on the occasion of the 47th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and the War of Independence, the city of Pomáz awarded him the title of Honorary Citizen of Pomáz with his posthumous title. The community house of Békásmegyer – Ófalu , the Szent József House, named one of its halls after him. In 2011 , the National Memorial and Reverence Committee declared the grave in the Óbuda cemetery part of the National Cemetery. [12] In 2013, the local government of Óbuda-Békásmegyer initiated the change of the name of a public area to Wrabel Sándor Street.
