About the Item

Sarah Adams Windbreakers III Original Acrylic Painting Acrylic Paint on Paper Size: 43.5 cm x 53.5 cm Sold Unframed Windbreakers III is an original painting by Sarah Adams. It is the 3rd in the series of a particular secluded beach on the Devon coastline. This painting depicts the scene at dusk. North London born and raised artist, Sarah Adams, uses a limited colour palette of acrylics anchored with white, painted onto paper and canvases, in thick, buttery brush marks. Up close, you can see her expressive mark making, but stand back from her work, and more detail comes into view. Her art practice is inspired by her home city of London, and her works take in well known, recognisable views, painted to create a calming, peaceful feel of what are otherwise, crowded and bustling settings. Sarah is a prolific painter, and has been part of many London based exhibitions, notably the ING Discerning Eye, Mall Galleries in 2016 and 2018, and short-listed for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions 2015 and 2020. Her work has also been exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair, The Strand Gallery, Camden Image Gallery and Espacio Gallery. In 2013 she created a series on Battersea Power Station, and completed a commission for the redevelopment of the site. Her work was reproduced on a large scale for the hoardings of the new buildings. Recently, Sarah has explored landscapes and seascapes, still painted with her expressive mark making, alongside her Dinky Miniatures, depicting London and coastal scenes, on really tactile postcard size canvases.

After the rain [2021] Signed by the artist Acrylic on wooden panel Image size: H:51 cm x W:51 cm x D:2cm Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look I have always been a bit obsessed with horizons and how a horizontal line on a painting becomes 'landscape' in the viewers mind. I love the idea of suggesting a landscape, but then abstracting the subject and using the materials in such a way that the texture and details made by the paint, and the grain of the wood panel, are as important if not more so than the subject itself." Rebecca enjoys balancing on the fine line between abstraction and representation, to imply a landscape with paint rather than accurately visually recording it. Her landscapes are somehow subliminal. Somehow ‘other’. Somewhere not quite real. An idea or a memory of a landscape. She aims to create an emotionally charged atmosphere with colour and texture and line, working with paint for paint’s sake. Rebecca Tucker...

  • Sunset
    By Greta Van Campen
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Triangle with 18 inch sides Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...
