About the Item
This beautiful oil on canvas painting is by Serop Vardanian (1914-1997). Vardanian is best known for his depictions of trees, and this one, titled “The Giant” has a warm radiance. Serop Vardanian is an Armenian American artist. He was born in Iran, lived in various locales in Asia and Europe and finally settled in Northern California near San Francisco in 1962. This looks like a painting he may have done in the hills near his home (maybe on Skyline Boulevard in San Mateo County) at a time of day when the fog was starting to burn off. It measures 22” x 28” (28.25” x 34.25” framed). It is composed of oil on canvas. Vardanian’s brush work is soft and sinuous and his sky is luminous. The painting is framed in a gold frame with black velvet lining. It is signed in the lower right and on the reverse. There is a tiny label that reads “The Giant”. The painting looks like it was done in the 1960s or 1970s based on the frame and stretchers. The painting and frame are in very good condition.
