About the Item
Early 20th Century oil on canvas view of a vineyard, Cypress trees and a farm beyond by French artist Sylvain Coste. Signed bottom left. Presented in wood and gilt frame.
A charming and colourful painting of vines in a vineyard after the 'vendange' or harvest, in the background a line of Cypress trees give shade to the bastide and farm buildings in the background. Coste has used a wonderfully varied colour palette to give the work a vibrancy and freshness. He has used a coarse canvas and his impasto technique gives a wonderful texture to the work. A classical work but a great size and with a very modern feeling that would grace any interior.
Sylvain Coste was a noted Marseille artist painting at the beginning of the 20th century. He captured scenes of Marseille in the South of France and the surrounding countryside.
