T.E. Pencke
Rue de Rivoli, Paris

c. 1965

This impressionist oil painting of elegant late nineteenth-century Parisian life depicts an elegantly-attired family walking down the Rue de Rivoli, bordered by the Jardin de Tuileries on the left, Paris. Horse-drawn cabs and carriages fill the spacious thoroughfare; to the right are the famous arcaded shops. Signed in maroon, lower right. Oil on canvas measures 11 3/4 x 15 3/4. The painting is housed in a 21 x 25 x 2 5/8-inch gold- tone wooden frame with a darker inlay border. Rue de Rivoli is one of the most famous streets of Paris, a commercial street whose shops include the most fashionable names in the world. It bears the name of Napoleon's early victory against the Austrian army, at the battle of Rivoli, fought January 14 and 15, 1797. T.E. Pencke lives and works in Paris. He is known for his Impressionist street scenes.
