About the Item
Signed lower right, "Hagedorn-Olsen" for Theodor Hagedorn-Olsen (Danish, 1902-1996) and painted in 1989. Formerly in the collection of the Johannes Larsen Museum, Norway (label verso).
A substantial Post-Impressionist oil showing an expansive view of the Grand Canal beneath a clouded blue sky with a gondola passing beneath the Rialto Bridge and bright sunshine reflecting off distant buildings. A scintillating late work by this Danish master.
Theodor Hagedorn-Olsen first studied in Copenhagen with Carl Thorpe (1923-24) and, subsequently, with Othon Friesz in Paris (1924-25). He furthered his art studies in Arles at the time Monet was completing his series of water-lilies before returning to Copenhagen where he attended the Royal Danish Academy for a further three years (1926-29). He later continued his travels and education on extended painting trips to Spain and Italy. An early European exponent of Modernist color theory, Hagedorn-Olsen is known particularly for his monumental and sculpturally-derived figural works, dramatically composed and executed in a palette of saturated, complementary colors. Hagedorn-Olsen is well-listed in art biographical dictionaries, including Benezit and Weilbach, and his work may be found in the permanent collections of numerous public museums.

- 'Mediterranean Orange Grove', Paris Modernist, Royal Danish Academy of Fine ArtsBy Viggo RorupLocated in Santa Cruz, CASigned lower left, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1967. A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil landscape showing a view of the Mediterranean with an orange tree and blossoming apple trees in the foreground, framing a view across cultivated fields towards the azure ocean beneath a clouded lilac and ivory sky. A charming and robust work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical and painterly brushwork, elegantly expressing it here in a gentle palette of moss, teal, lavender and soft pastels. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and most importantly to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into the nuances of light. We are pleased to offer a dazzling work from the artist's late period, that exemplifies these later qualities of his mature work, harmoniously capturing the warmth and color of a southern summer landscape. - PrintempsBy Charles LevierLocated in Costa Mesa, CAA beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...Category
