About the Item
"Hillside and Cat at Fiesole" captures a vividly detailed Italian landscape. In the foreground, a cat is perched on a platform, staring directly at the viewer with an air of mystery in its expression. Flanking the cat on both sides are lemon trees, laden with ripe lemons. Behind these trees, varying shades of green foliage adorn the hillside, creating a richly layered landscape. These trees extend towards the back of the canvas, drawing the viewer’s eye deeper into the scene, toward the scattered buildings on the hillside and atop the hill. Tom Mabon masterfully employs color to capture the light and hues of the Italian countryside, rendering the scene both lively and poetic.
Tom Mabon (b. 1956) graduated from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen. His paintings, drawings and hand-printed lithographs are a combination of actual views with added details, remembered and drawn over many years. His paintings include evocative renditions of farmland and pasture through the seasons with carefully constructed compositions and a superb mastery of colour and tone.
