About the Item
This 19th Century painting shows middle eastern men viewing classical ruins. The one in the foreground sitting alone, and in the back sitting together facing away from the ruins. This painting shows not only a mastery of figurative painting but a mastery of landscape and building painting. It includes all of the important classical elements of the ruins while keeping the detail of the scenery and figures around it. The figures whos faces the viewer can see are very expressive, as the artist included numerous details to bring life to the characters in the painting. Although the artist is unknown, this painting is circa 1850s or 1860s and was painted by someone in the Orientalist school. This painting is unsigned and unframed but is in excellent condition for its period.
