Valerie B Hird
Valerie Hird’s body of work is a visual compilation of the experiences, associations and memories collected in her trips through the Middle East, Northern Africa, Spain and Turkey. Hird creates a fascinating topography of her own through the landscapes conquered by her suggestive memories. Her work is organic, evocative, and extremely personal in its flow. We can see this distinct essence in her representations of the rocky arid mountains and the aroma of the perfumes sold by street venders. The elements, colors and patterns absorbed from her trips, take over the surface of her work. The cypresses from Granada are invaded by the Alhambra glazed tiles; the Turkish mountains adopt the kilim patterns; the nomadic people performing their daily tasks are camouflaged by the colors of their fabrics in the landscapes behind them. Not only the imagery itself, but the history, literature, myths and traditions from these countries are incorporated in her work. The meditation and investigation of creational myths from all over the world have led her into creating a multi-dimensional cosmology of her own, centered on the creation of the natural world. The connections between the cultures and their environment are processed in Hird’s paintings as a meditation on our contemporary world, leading to a growing concern with religious and cultural ambiguities. Using quotes and messages from extremist sects and cultural ideas from both the East and the West, she analyzes and unites them through their similarities rather than their differences. There remains a certain aesthetic connection in the representations of the countries she has visited, intertwined by the projections of her inner landscape. Hird’s work considers and connects cultural complexities, and presents them to the public to travel with her through their contemplation. Valerie Hird graduated with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a MFA from Vermont College. In 2008 she was granted an award from the Community Foundation of Vermont. Hird has worked and travelled throughout the Middle East, North of Africa, Southern Europe, Central Asia, and South America. Likewise, she has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. Her work belongs to such public and corporate collections as The Rhode Island School of Design, Providence RI; The Fleming Museum, Burlington VT; The Exxon Corporation, Dallas, TX; and Pfizer Inc.; among others. Born in Massachusetts in 1955, Hird moved to Vermont in 1979, where she currently lives and works.

- 'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary Landscape, Rural, Sea, Ocean, Beach BlueBy Sophia MilliganLocated in Penzance, GB'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary mixed media landscape painting, Cornwall Original Artwork, Unframed _________________ January morning, heavy swell and a strong southwester, rain imminent, sheltering beneath lichen furred granite outcrops. A plein air painting from the series 'Holan ha Dor' (Meaning 'Salt and Earth in Cornish). West Cornwall is a harshly beautiful peninsula, jutting out into the wild tireless ocean, shaped and moulded by powerful salt laden Atlantic winds, and criss-crossed by ancient, tangled hedgerows. Drawn to the immediacy of moments, underpinned by enduring narratives, Sophia's fluid expressive paintings explores the flux and balance in the nature of all things: The freedom of the air and solidity of the soil; Of anchored stone and rhythmic water; Of human narratives written in the wild landscapes; In the sensual interplay of light and shadow. They capture an essence of the equilibrium between wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; and the enduring and the effervescent. Mixed media on watercolour paper Signed and inscribed Unframed 23 x 30cm / 9 x 12 inches __________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in prestigious international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago...Category

- At Play IXBy Greta Van CampenLocated in New Orleans, LA11 x 12 inches framed Greta Van Campen is known for her geometric hard-edged graphic approach to representation. She has traveled across the United States sourcing inspiration from the landscapes, small towns, and cities. Now, with a young family, she gets most of her inspiration close to home. Scenic ocean views and paintings of flowers from her gardens make up the bulk of her new work. She paints in her home studio, beginning each piece with a photograph she has taken. She uses the photo as a reference while drawing from memories of her experiences, sometimes also working from sketches done on location. The image is translated into a painting by first setting large compositional elements and then finding shapes and masking off areas with tape, mixing the desired color of paint, and continuing to tape and paint until the desired amount of detail is reached. This distilled and stylized approach imbues her traditional subject matter with a freshness and modernity. As Van Campen explains, she “figure(s) out how to recreate a version of the natural, atmospheric place by turning it into a more geometric, color and balance-driven scene that is hopefully appealing, interesting, and authentic.” Van Campen was born in and resides in Maine. She received her BFA from Bowdoin College, ME. She is represented by Octavia Art Gallery, LA & TX, and Dowling Walsh Gallery...Category
