About the Item
Inspired by nature, Jessica Pisano’s interest in art began at a young age. It was the beautiful landscape of her hometown of Martha's Vineyard that served as her muse. She later pursued her passion for the arts at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, graduating in 1999 with a BFA in drawing and photography. Pisano participated in a year abroad program to study fine art at the Lorenzo de Medici School in Florence, Italy. In 2002, she earned an MA in Arts Administration from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Pisano has had numerous solo and group shows. Her work is widely collected in both private and public collections around the world. PROCESS My work is both abstract and representational. I use the traditional indirect painting techniques of the Old Masters by applying oil paint in many translucent layers giving the painting a detailed and highly rendered appearance. As a contrast, I also use contemporary techniques in which paint is loosely applied in an intuitive manner. The combination of these techniques from both the past and the present is intriguing to me as it creates a unique juxtaposition of styles.

- MuskokanBy Robert MarchessaultLocated in Montreal, QuebecMy painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...Category
