  • Mother dog and her puppies, 19th Century French Barbizonf armhouse painting
    Located in Norwich, GB
An charming 19th century dog painting depicting a mother dogue and her exuberant topsy turvy pups by the farmhouse barns or cowsheds , with a young child given them a fuss! Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...

  • Antique Oil on Canvas Painting "Dancing Nymphs" Mythological Landscape Scene
    Located in Firenze, IT
A luxuriant forest is the romantic and lyrical landscape where the dance of the nude nymphs takes place in this joyful 19th Century antique oil on canvas painting featuring a mythological scene. Dance of the Nymphs and Naiads is a myth inspired by the tales of ancient Greece and ancient Rome, a subject already much loved in the Renaissance period as an allegory of rebirth - as in one of the most famous paintings in the world the Spring by Sandro Botticelli- then reproduced throughout the neoclassicism by academic painters -due to the renewed interest in classical artworks following the discovery of archaeological sites- and taken up later, with ecological purposes and meanings, also by the Barbizon school and Impressionist artists. The present artwork – signed Vagner low left and datable to the second half of the 19th century - is closely inspired by an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). This historical oil on canvas painting, featuring a joyful scene with the three graces and other dancing nymphs...

  • "Boats Near An Inlet, " Olive Parker Black, Female Artist, Tonalism Landscape
    By Olive Parker Black
    Located in New York, NY
Olive Parker Black (1868 - 1948) Boats Near An Inlet Oil on canvas 12 x 24 inches Signed lower left Provenance: Shannon's, Milford, Connecticut, April 30, 2009, Lot 224 Private Collection, New York. Olive Parker Black was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She enrolled in the School of Painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she studied with Otto Grundmann and Frank Crowninshield. In the early 1890s, she left for New York City to study at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase and Edwin Blashfield. Under the tutelage of William Merritt Chase, artist Olive Parker Black studied plein air techniques of the Impressionists, and was considered one of Chase’s best students. She also attended Shinnecock Summer School of Art on Long Island, where Chase taught. 19th century artist Olive Parker Black moved to New York City in 1910; however, she maintained a summer residence in South Egremont, Massachusetts, where Barbizon-style artist Hugh Bolton Jones also summered. Jones apparently had a great influence on Black’s style also—skillfully executed landscapes that combined looser brushwork of the Impressionists with Barbizon-derived tonal qualities. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists; Painters, Sculptors; New York Society of painters; American Artists Professional League and the Boston Art...
