Signed with initials lower right "H.H." for Hyacinthe Hill (American, 1920-1989) and painted circa 1955 A substantial mid-century figural oil of a young woman seated naked in an opened conch shell set on a sandy beach before stylized breakers beneath a vibrant sunset. A lyrical and enigmatic work by this notable mid-century poet and outsider artist. Hyacinthe Hill was the recipient of numerous prizes and awards for her work, including: the Poetry Society of America awards, 1961, 1962, 1964, and 1967; Effa Stark Sanders National Lyric Contest award, 1962; two Mentor poetry awards, 1966; International Poet Laureate and Poet-Leader Merittisimus Award, Manila, 1969; International Poet Laureate, golden laurel wreath and diploma of award, First and Second World Congress of Poets, Manila, 1971, Taiwan, 1973; Gold Commemorative Medal from the Shah of Iran, 1972; distinguished service citation, World Poetry Society, 1973; York Award, 1974; Keats Poetry Prize, 1975, for poem, "The Riveter"; named an International Woman of 1975, with laureate honors, International Hall of Fame of Women of Distinction, 1975. Honorary degrees include: Ph.D. from Northern Pontifical Academy, 1969, and St. Olav's College, Sweden, 1969; Doctor of Arts and Letters, Great China Arts College, Hong Kong, 1969; D.H., International Academy of Alfred the Great, Hull, England, 1970; L.H.D. from L'Universite Libre d'Asie, 1974; H.L.D., Free University, 1974.
