About the Item

VIRGILIO GUIDI (Rome 1891 - Venice 1984) Born in Rome in 1891, he first attended the Technical Institute and then the Evening School of Painting. In 1908, abandoning the attendance of courses, he became an apprentice in the studio of the decorator and restorer Giovanni Capranesi. In 1911 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and these were the years of the first reflections on the use of light in paintings, a theme that he later took up in Venetian views. It was during the academy that he began to exhibit his works first at the Society of Amateurs and Connoisseurs of Fine Arts, where he himself was fascinated by the works of Cezanne and Matisse, and then at the III International Art Exhibition of the Roman Secession. In 1924 he was acclaimed by the public and critics for a work presented at the 14th Venice Biennale entitled "Tram" where the representation is not yet completely dissolved but the figures are immersed in a rarefied atmosphere. In 1926 he participated in the first exhibition of the “Novecento” movement, while maintaining a strong personal identity: Guidi almost always proceeded in research for cycles of subjects such as the Giudecca, faces, seascapes, eyes and the sky. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and died on 7 January 1984.
