This is a fine original antique oil painting depicting a Victorian scene of ‘Glasgow Docks’ by moonlight by the very popular British artist and former pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw, Walter Linsley Meegan (1859-1944). The painting is signed by the artist and sold in a newly commissioned fine quality gold metal leaf Baroque swept frame. As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. After studying at the Leeds School of Art in the 1880’s, Walter Meegan lived and worked in America from his studio on Fifth Avenue. Upon returning to England he became a pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw whose work greatly influenced his own. Like Atkinson Grimshaw, Meegan became most famous for his moonlit nocturnes. Dimensions: (framed) 76cm x 63cm (30” x 24¾”) Dimensions: (canvas only) 60cm x 47cm (23¾” x 18½”) Medium: Oil on canvas board. Provenance: Private UK collection. Presentation: Bespoke fine gold metal leaf swept frame. All of the new frames we commission are made to order for us by one of the UK’s finest period frame makers. Condition: Excellent.
