WILHELM EMANUEL BEHM
Wilhelm Behm, Fall Landscape, with Lake and Hilly Nature Surroundings

About the Item

A beautiful Swedish autumn landscape on a sunny day with a lake and a large birch tree in focus surrounded by a hilly landscape and vegetation painted by Wilhelm Emanuel Behm (1859-1934). It is signed "Wilh. Behm" and dated 1887. The frame is original and in good condition. It might feel too heavy in the taste of today but can easily be changed. Behm was a Swedish artist and studied at the Royal Fine Arts Academy in Stockholm 1879–1885 and in Paris 1889–1890. He joined the plein-air realism of the 1880s and shows in his early works a fine, blond value painting like in our painting. Later, Behm connects with the national romanticism of the 1890s, and his art takes on a stronger mood and a deeper color, preferably copper-red. He preferably depicted the middle Swedish landscape, especially in spring break and twilight light. Among his works are "Vinterdag" (winter day) at the National Museum and "Marsafton" (Mars evening) at the Gothenburg Art Museum. He is also represented in the National Museum in Stockholm with a number of paintings. Norrköping Art Museum also have his works. He was described at his death as belonging to "the old-fashioned and solid school of landscape art" and a "perfect representative of realistic plein-air painting" who did not allow himself to be influenced by the many new trends in art during the latter part of his life. Nevertheless, in his membership of the Art Academy since 1910, he showed an idealistic faith in the development of art and interest in the young people whose art was so different from his - a testimony to the motto "Ars longa, vita brevis" ("Art is long, life is short") . Measurements given including the frame. Without the frame they are: H25cm W45.5cm

  • Christian Berg, Pair of Goosander Birds On Ice Floes.
    Located in Stockholm, SE
A female and male Goosander bird on ice floes. In the center of the painting there is a smaller opening in the ice covered waters. This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Made sketch drawings at the free academies Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière and in 1927 he met the Swedish artist Erik Olson...

  • Ship Leaving the Bay at Sunrise French Seascape 18th century Rococo Oil Painting
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Attributed Charles François Grenier de Lacroix or Charles - François Lacroix de Marseille (1700 - 1782) as signed lower left on the stone “Lacroix”. The scene of the departure of nobles on a ship, somewhere among the Mediterranean landscapes at sunrise. Lacroix's sense of color and attention to detail are particularly impressive: the sea is calm, the sun is rising and as a soft pink hue begins to emerge in the clouds, the morning haze has not yet cleared and the air is clear and clean, large ship...
