About the Item

William Kimmins McMinn (1819-1898) Presented in a 19th century ornate frame, I am offering for sale the following oil on canvas: The full-rigged merchantman Ebba Brahe, in-bound for Liverpool and signalling her number as she passes the Perch Rock fort and lighthouse at the mouth of the Mersey Signed and dated 1852 There are a number of McMinn’s works in The Maritime Museum of Liverpool, they are not a patch on this one; they neither match it in size nor splendour. The painting also has historic interest, as the New Brighton light house used to display a black ball if there was sufficient water in the Rock channel to allow the vessel to safely navigate her way through; you will see in the painting that the ball is displayed telling the ship’s Captain it is safe to enter the channel then sail onwards into the river Mersey. The Ebba Brahe was built by P. Valin in Quebec in 1852 and then sailed to Liverpool where she was bought by J.S. De Wolf & Co. She measured 198 feet long had a 40 foot beam and displaced 1,437 tons. She saw service as an emigrant carrier on the run to Australia. She was later sold to R Davies, another Liverpool owner in 1859. This part of her career saw her at work on the India trade captained by D. Owen. She remained in this role for over ten years until, in the early 1870s, after springing a leak in the Indian Ocean, she put into Mauritius, where she was sold. Probably under tow, she was taken to Calcutta where she ended her days. This painting with its frame has just benefitted from a thorough clean and is now ready to grace your wall.
