Original frame
Here, the physical forms that make up the water lock and canal boats have been reduced to their simplest shapes. With the angular artistic choice, combined with the use of bold block colour, it is clear that the artist was somewhat influenced by Vorticism (which was essentially England's answer to the Italian Futurism). Certainly, helped by its elongated landscape composition, this painting effectively conveys the idea of dynamism, energy and movement that is found on a working water way.
