Sherry, William Grant (American, 1914-2003). ROCKPORT, MAINE, 1960. Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, and also signed, titled, dated, and inscribed on the verso "To my friends Shirley and Bill from Bill Sherry, 7/16/64." 16 1/8 x 18 1/4 inches, framed to 17 x 19 inches. In excellent condition. A view of woods, a house, water and a boat, all almost abstract. Sheery was married to the actress Bette Davis from 1945 to 1950. He is the father of Davis's daughter, Barbara (BD) Merrill. They divorced when she became involved with Gary Merrill, her costar in "All About Eve." Merrill later adopted BD.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.
