About the Item

Lorenzo de Caro (Naples, 1719 - 1777) attributable The Trinity crowns the Virgin (probable preparatory sketch) Oil painting on canvas (60 x 46cm. - in frame 72 x 58 cm.) The interesting painting that we show you depicts the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin into heaven, according to which Mary, the mother of Jesus, having completed the course of her earthly life, was welcomed into Heaven, both in body and soul. What makes our canvas precious is the depiction of the particular moment of the coronation, which the author tells us about as a solemn celestial ceremony celebrated by the three members of the Holy Trinity. The scene is all an apotheosis of light and heavenly beauty, with the Virgin surrounded by a jubilation of festive angels, placed in the midst of the blessing Son and the Father with the globus cruciger, in the presence of the Holy Spirit, depicted by the eternally white dove in flight, who place them place the crown of 12 stars on their heads, as the Holy Scriptures recall. She reclined on a throne of clouds she is ascending and looks up with trepidation upwards with arms outstretched, while the angels follow a rhythmic disposition. From a stylistic point of view, the work shows the characteristic features typical of Lorenzo De Caro (Naples, 1719 - 1777), painter of the late Neapolitan Baroque, with his unmistakable decisive brushstrokes defined by a lively chiaroscuro, and enhanced by the usual range brilliant chromatic. We are inclined to place its execution around the middle of the century, considered the best moment of De Caro's production when, while showing a strong link with the lesson of Solimena, it disrupts its monumentality through the use of chromatic spots of marked brightness and , referring to the refined Arcadian atmospheres of De Mura, reaches results of intense expressiveness, preluding the elegance of Rocaille. The canvas, both for the small format in spite of the compositional fullness, and for the rapidity of the stroke, leads us to consider its origin as a model for a larger painting.
