About the Item
From an early stage in his art career, Marco studied the painting techniques of many of the old masters. Over time, he modified and reinterpreted them in new ways to create his unique personal style and contemporary finish. Marco also employs “sfumato”, a technique mastered during the Renaissance by Italian paintings, in a new way with soft transitions between each part of the painting. This achieves very delicate and natural colour passages.
Marco is particularly interested in the changes within a person’s body and personality. This is why he often portrays people in a moment of metamorphosis. The bodies of the characters become allegories, figurative expressions of various concepts and above all, the relationship and fragile balance between humans and Nature. Those continuous transformations, human figures evolving into unanimated matter, the contamination of Nature, as well as the resilience of human beings, are the main focus of this artistic research. In this way, Marco’s paintings slip away from the boundaries of the typical definition of hyperrealism.

Marco Grassi
Marco Grassi (Grama) is a painter of Italian origin, born in 1966 and now living & working in Lugano, Switzerland. Marco creates remarkable portraits thanks to their realism, always accompanied by a special touch and a pinch of surrealism. The artist gives special importance to the thoroughness with which he handles the details of his not-very-traditional subjects. Since the beginning of his career, Marco Grassi developed a very personal style which praises the identity of the female subject in the specific moment in which they are painted. With his intense female portraits, Marco searches to captivate the viewer, by creating a silent dialogue between the subject and the audience. Marco Grassi's pieces are striking, they combine pure decoration and hyper-realistic colour. In his most recent works, Marco has abandoned the element that was once his trademark style and technique: the decisive brushstrokes which outlined his anatomic forms and lent a sense of stability to the whole of the figure, and contrasted with bold colours, blended with a spatula, and drippings to break them down and make them more subtle. His recent subjects display less certainty, which once allowed the figures to integrate themselves fully with the complex weave of colours. Today, the background against which they are represented is more decisive and reflects the subjects' facial expressions and intense silence, creating complicity with the observer. Marco Grassi's works have been exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions, and international fairs such as Art Basel, SCOPE Basel and the Moscow Art Fair. He was selected to be at the opening of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011.

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces.
Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance.
My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry.
There is nothing “new...
