Across the panels of this large diptych by Milly Ristvedt, passages of crimson, indigo, orange and burnt umber move and vibrate in a contemplative narrative. The piece is made more profound by its title "Real and Imagined" which makes a philosophical point with regards to non-figurative art: what one sees in the forms and colors is what is imagined and yet, naturally, informed by what one has been experienced in reality. A monumental masterpiece painted at the height of this artist's creative genius, it has been kept within the artist's private collection until this time.
The two panels will be shipped with hardware for bolting together on arrival.
Ristvedt is a master colourist and an established icon of Canadian post-painterly abstraction. Early in her career in Toronto in the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella.
Ristvedt’s work can be found in major public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Musée d'art contemporain in Montreal, Harvard University, Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada Council Art Bank, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Agnes Etherington Art Centre and more. Her work has been included in many publications, including Nasgaard’s Abstract Painting in Canada (2014). Ristvedt was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004 and honored with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Since 1968, Ristvedt has received seven Canada Council awards and two Ontario Arts Council awards. She has had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows.

Milly Ristvedt
Milly Ristvedt, RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964, after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art.
In Toronto, during the 1960s and 1970s, Ristvedt was making and exhibiting large-scale paintings alongside a small but defined group of non-figurative painters who, like Ristvedt, had planted roots in modernism. These roots continue to run deep for Ristvedt, who completed her MA in Art History at Queen's University in 2011 with a thesis that explored color in the grid of contemporary painting.
Ristvedt's paintings are part of private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Vancouver Art Gallery. She has had over 50 solo exhibitions. In 2012, Ristvedt received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her service as an advocate for artists.
