Montague Dawson
Solent Ones Rounding the Lepe Mark

Circa 1950

About the Item

Solent One Racers cut across the rolling waves in this striking work by master maritime artist Montague Dawson. These are racing on the Solent, the strait between the Isle of Wight and the English mainland. The Solent One Design was one of the first One Design classes created. 22 were built between 1896 and 1897 for members of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Island Sailing Club. Here, there is a fair wind running against the tide, filling their sails but creating more turbulence on the water- a typical afternoon sailing on the Solent. These yachts are rounding Lepe Mark, on the Hampshire coast. Today, only one of the Solent Ones remains on the water, still racing on the Solent for which it was designed. We've been told by someone that has sailed on her that Dawson has exactly captured both the yacht under sail and the character and color of the sea with brilliant blues and bold brushstrokes. Yachting scenes are among Dawson's most sought after works. With an active sea, brilliant sky and the close view of the sailors in the main cutter, this example has key aspects which are most desired by collectors of Dawson's works, making this one of the best we have seen. Signed LR: Montague Dawson Vallejo Gallery features the finest in marine and maritime antiques, artifacts and fine art including pieces of naval and yachting history including the America’s Cup, the age of the clipper ships and merchant ships through to the great passenger and ocean liners of the early 20th Century. • Amercan Merchant Ship in Philadelphia Harbor
    By Thomas Birch
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century. Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own. The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore. The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...

This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
