About the Item

"Naiades" French Modernist artist, circa 1950's The work is faintly monogrammed to the lower corner though hard to tell. There is a name verso but illegible - possibly the artist or a former collector. The painting style is close to Picasso and the artist was clearly inspired by his works, as well as Matisse. oil on canvas, unframed canvas: 32 x 39.5 inches provenance: private collection, France condition: very good and sound condition Naiads were believed to be beautiful, female spirits or minor deities associated with various types of water sources, such as rivers, streams, lakes, springs, and fountains. In Greek mythology, there were numerous Naiads, each tied to a specific water source. These nymphs were often depicted as young, attractive women who had a deep connection with the natural world, particularly with their respective water bodies. Naiads were considered to be lesser deities, and they played a significant role in various myths and stories, interacting with other gods, goddesses, and mortal figures. They were associated with the protection and guardianship of their water sources and were believed to possess the ability to grant blessings or curses to those who came into contact with their waters. It's worth noting that the concept of Naiads has been a subject of artistic representation and inspiration throughout history, appearing in various works of literature, poetry, and art.
