In this 120 cm x 120 cm oilpainting "Metus Mortis," I delved into the realms of vulnerability, mortality, and the poignant dance between life and death. This deeply personal self-portrait emerged as an exploration of my own existential musings, a visual narrative articulating the intricate threads that bind us to our mortality.
Stripped bare both physically and emotionally, the naked self-portrait signifies a deliberate shedding of societal layers, exposing the raw essence of my humanity. Standing unabashedly next to a human skeleton, a silent companion in the dance of existence, I sought to embrace the inevitable with a candid gaze.
The pistol in hand, a powerful symbol of agency and control, becomes a focal point in this introspective tableau. Pointing towards the side of the skull, the gesture underscores a dialogue with mortality—a stark reminder of life's transient nature and the choices that define our journey. The juxtaposition of the living form and the skeletal remains serves as a symbolic interplay, challenging the viewer to confront the intricacies of our mortality.
In "Metus Mortis," I aimed to grapple with my own fears, using the canvas as a mirror to reflect on the fragility of life. The title itself, meaning "Fear of Death," encapsulates the emotional weight woven into each brushstroke. It is not merely a depiction of mortality but a visceral exploration of the emotional terrain that accompanies the contemplation of our finite existence.
