Sigismondo Meyer
Water Bearer

1924

About the Item

oil on canvas 156 x 87 cm signed and dated lower right "Roma MCMXXIV S. Meyer d. S." Exhibitions : Venice Biennale, 1924 The genre that most characterises Sigismondo Meyer's painting is the portrait, to which he devoted himself assiduously from the 1910s onwards. It was during this decade that his work was documented at the Villa Strohl-Fern and Anticoli Corrado. Far from the anxious agitation of the Roman Secession, he seems to represent the conservative ranks of Roman painting, preserving the models of the Old Masters and the co-eval portraiture of the English school. During these years, he travelled assiduously between Europe and America, catering to the tastes of collectors of the time, fascinated by the balance and harmony of his compositions and his extremely casual touch. His portraits are still exhibited at the Amateurs and Connaisseurs Exhibitions. Exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1924, the luminous Water Bearer was presented as a modern nymph.

  • Diptych “The Cries of Fire”; “The Voices of the Stream”
    Located in Roma, RM
Artist: Eugenio Agneni Title: Diptych “The Cries of Fire”; “The Voices of the Stream”, c. 1865-71. Medium: oil on canvas mounted on wood, cm 128 x 60 each Signature: Signed at the bottom on the base of the frames provenance: Marquis Corsi Salviati; Rome, private collection The two canvases mounted on wooden supports are clearly attributable to Eugenio Agneni (Sutri, 1816 - Rome, 1879), a paradigmatic figure of an Italian painter of the Risorgimento years who combined a successful and continuous international artistic activity with an intense political and military activity, starting from the Roman effervescence following the election of Pius IX to the Mentana expedition and then in the early years of Rome as capital city, a period in which he held various administrative posts. The clarity of attribution of the works derives not only from the large central inscription inserted in the elaborate neo-Gothic scenic layout that encloses the two works in a diptych, but also from the direct kinship that links them to the cycle of frescoes painted between 1865 and 1868 for Marquis Antonio Maria Corsi Salviati in the reception hall of the family villa in Sesto Fiorentino. Agneni resided more or less permanently in the Florentine area between 1863 and 1871 after a phase of European-wide wanderings that began at the end of the Roman republican experience of 1849, in which he was involved to the point of having to hide for some time from July of that year at the home of Marquis Salviati, whom he therefore already knew before his subsequent move to Florence. The need to stay away from Italy, as well as his connections with Mazzinian exiles and evidently also a proven ability to reinvent himself in different cultural spheres allowed Agneni to profitably frequent the artistic scenes of London and Paris, cities in which he lived and worked, obtaining commissions of absolute importance (he decorated several rooms at Buckingham Palace, the Covent Garden Opera and the Louvre), and presenting his works at the Royal Academy in London. Therefore, if we are to keep faith with the remarks of his friend Luigi Calamatta ("you are full of money...

  • Marmore Falls
    Located in Roma, RM
signed and dated lower right 'A. Calcagnadoro 1902'. In this majestic view of the Marmore Falls (Umbria), dated 1902, Calcagnadoro exhibits a naturalism full of symbolic evocations, in which the water element is the protagonist of the view. The place, visited by many artists and writers during the grand tour of Italy, is perfectly rendered in its wild and bursting dimension. Son of art (his father Cesare Calcagnadoro was an appreciated decorator), the artist from Rieti worked for a long time in the field of decorative art, achieving his most important successes with monumental paintings for architectural environments (Rieti, Sala Consiliare; Ligurian Pavilion at the Ethnographic Exhibition of 1911; Salone dei Ministri in the Palace of the Ministry of Education). The fame he achieved through this type of activity led him to obtain first a chair at the "Scuola preparatoria alle arti ornamentali" (preparatory school for the ornamental arts) of the municipality of Rome, then at the Institute of Fine Arts, where he was in close contact with Adolfo De Carolis. In parallel with his work as a decorator, Calcagnadoro devoted himself with enthusiasm and greater creative freedom to easel painting, constantly presenting the results of his research at national exhibitions. After his initial attempts to explore the themes of antiquity, in the early years of the 20th century the painter turned to the 'humanitarian socialism' of Duilio Cambellotti, Giacomo Balla, Giovanni Prini and Domenico Baccarini. His socially themed works convinced critics and institutions alike, as evidenced by the gold medal he was awarded for his painting The Unemployed, a dramatic painting of denunciation exhibited at the Florence Promotrice in 1904. Perhaps in deliberate opposition to the rhetorical language of architectural friezes...
