William Malherbe was a French Post Impressionist painter born in 1884. His success came in the 1930’s exhibiting at the gallery Durand Ruel, the famous Paris gallery who’s fortune had been made by backing the Impressionists.
Fleeing the Nazi’s in 1939 he immigrated to New York city exhibiting at the Corcoram Gallery in Washington DC. Here he was highly sort after and some of the examples shown come from this period. He later returned to France in 1948 and passed away in 1955.
His works are in the collection of the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris amongst others. These particular examples may well have been from his family as a very large tranche of his work came up for auction recently. Each were of a particular high standard, not of the quality of previous offerings at auction. He may well have withheld works and shipped them from New York on his return to France for his own collection.

William Malherbe
Malherbe William, born on December 28, 1884, was a distinguished French painter whose artistic contributions flourished within the realm of post-impressionism. His creative brilliance illuminated the modern art scene during his active years. William Malherbe started exhibiting in Paris at the age of 18 years. He studied Architecture for a year and a half at the School of Decorative Arts. He has experimented with various styles, such as Cubism, Fauvism, Post-impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and in the end developed a purely personal style. Malherbe had among his friends and inspiration the foremost painters of this lively period in the Arts, such as Renoir and Bonnard. Between 1939 and 1948 William Malherbe stayed in the United States. However, Malherbe developed a singular style of his own, unique enough to be singled out by the famous art historian, critic and poet Gustave Kahn as “a particularly interesting artist of the day”. Renowned for his evocative works, such as “The Lady with the Pink Hat,” “Still Life with Anemones,” and “The Reading,” Malherbe displayed a profound mastery of various subjects, including portraiture, still life, and captivating genre scenes. Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, Spencer grew up in Stroud, Gloucestershire, and articled as an architectural pupil in 1936. During the war Spencer served with the Royal Engineers in Egypt and Italy, and it was during this time that he met John Stanton Ward, who became a life long friend. Often drawing together, Ward’s enthusiasm was inspirational and galvanising, and on demobilisation Spencer enrolled at Chelsea School of Art, whilst simultaneously teaching at Wimbledon. The enigmatic paintings of René Magritte have become some of the most familiar and celebrated of the Surrealist movement. Among the most influential of the Surrealist painters of the 20th century, Magritte is an artist of international renown, as beloved for his popular appeal as he is for the psychological intensity of his works. The present oil on canvas, entitled Le carnaval du sage, was executed in 1947 at the height of his career, and it is a tour-de-force example of the haunting, mysterious scenes that comprise his oeuvre.
Painted in the years following the Second World War, Le carnaval du sage showcases several recurring themes from Magritte’s oeuvre. Chiefly, a juxtaposition between the visible and the hidden is keenly felt. Throughout his career, Magritte explores the psychological obsession with revealing what is hidden, particularly with regard to the human face. In his Le fils de l’homme, he obscures the face of a man in a bowler hat with an apple, while his Les amants (Metropolitan Museum of Art) conceals the faces of two lovers with white sheets. In Le carnaval du sage, Magritte juxtaposes the blatant nudity of his central figure by masking her face, simultaneously revealing and concealing her from the viewer.
The work also incorporates two of Magritte’s most common tropes – the glass of water and the baguette. Lending the scene a strange sense of domesticity, they appear infinitely familiar and distinctly out of place, and thus heighten the uncanny effect of Magritte’s composition. In the background hovers a ghost obscured by a sheet, a figure which was of particular fascination to Magritte beginning in 1946. Biography: Hallet André was born in the Liege in 1890, emerged as a luminary in the world of Belgian post-impressionist painting. His oeuvre, a testament to his profound talent, has graced the walls of over 60 museums worldwide, including the venerable Louvre in Paris, France.
Hallet’s artistic repertoire was as expansive as it was breathtaking. He wielded his brush with mastery in a multitude of genres, creating enchanting landscapes, bustling cityscapes, serene garden views, captivating marine scenes, evocative genre depictions, and intimate portraits that breathed life onto his canvases.
The journey of André Hallet’s artistry began under the tutelage and guidance of R. Heintz. He honed his craft further at the Academy in Liege.
It was in the South of France that Hallet discovered the transcendent allure of light and the sun, infusing his work with a cheerful and impressionistic burst of color. The vibrant hues of his palette mirrored the radiant landscapes he encountered in Flanders and the Mediterranean, from the sun-kissed shores of Southern France to the picturesque vistas of Italy.
In 1920, Hallet embarked on a new chapter, working in the enchanting city of Bruges before ultimately settling in Leuven. Each location left its mark on his art, contributing to the rich tapestry of his creative journey.
A turning point in Hallet’s life came in 1934 when the Belgian government sent him to Congo. Later, in 1947, he found his home on the shores of Lake Kivu in Kisenyi, present-day Rwanda. It was here that he would spend the remainder of his life, captivated by the mesmerizing beauty of the African landscape. He passed away in 1959, leaving a lasting legacy.
