Peter Adams
Secret Cove; Afternoon Surge at Point Lobos State Reserve

2022

About the Item

Provenance Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist; February 2023 submitted to Autry Museum of the American West for the "Masters of the American West" exhibition and sale. UNFRAMED:24" x 30" Artist Statement “An exciting discovery for me was finding this intimate cove located off the beaten path in the southeastern corner of Point Lobos Nature Reserve. The ocean’s surging energy forced between the vertical rocky walls of this inlet was captivating. In painting this work, I particularly loved illuminating the patterns and transparency of the crashing shore break in the foreground on the right. I then composed an echoing effect by emphasizing a crashing wave in the middle distance to the left as well as in the background. By creating this rhythmic effect and by modeling the surface of the water, the theme becomes the power of the surf and foam that ebb and flow in nature.” —Peter Adams Exhibited Autry Museum of the American West "Masters of the American West", Los Angeles, February 11 – March 26, 2023

Untitled (Snow-capped Mountains) – Grand Teton National Park, c. 1930s
By Marion Kavanaugh Wachtel
Located in Pasadena, CA
Provenance Consigned to the gallery by private collectors Description Marion Kavanagh was a pupil of William Keith in San Francisco who, upon learning of her move to Southern California, urged her to contact Pasadena artist Elmer Wachtel. A romance blossomed and the two were married in 1904. During their marriage, out of respect for her husband, Marion Wachtel painted in watercolor, giving Elmer Wachtel the honor of painting in the more “serious” medium of oil. After the untimely passing of her husband and a period of grieving, Marion took up oil painting in 1930, working both en plein air and in the studio. This masterful plein air painting is a poetic interpretation of the snow-capped mountains in Grand Teton National Park...
