About the Item

Measures Painting 10 x 14 inches Framed 16 x 20 inches Phil Latimer Dike (1906–1990) was a prominent American painter and art educator, renowned for his contributions to the California watercolor movement. Born in Redlands, California, Dike developed an early interest in art, leading him to study at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1924 to 1927. He furthered his education at the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied under notable artists such as George Bridgman, Frank Vincent DuMond, and George Luks. Dike's artistic journey included a period in France at the American Academy in Fontainebleau, where he absorbed European modernist influences. Upon returning to California, he became a pivotal figure in the development of the "California Style" of watercolor painting, characterized by vibrant, expressive depictions of the state's landscapes and coastal scenes. In addition to his painting career, Dike played a significant role in art education. He taught at institutions such as the Chouinard Art Institute, the Claremont Graduate School, and Scripps College, influencing a generation of artists with his innovative approaches to watercolor techniques. Dike's works have been exhibited in prestigious institutions and are part of collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Library of Congress. His legacy continues to be celebrated for its contribution to American art and the distinct California watercolor movement. The work presented here though unsigned, was exhibited at the Palisades Art Center in Pacific Palisades, California c. 1955. It’s wonderful abstraction of the Santa Monica Mountains with dwellings hugging the foothills below give a sense of drama and grandeur to this fabled part of the California coastline. It retains a handmade modernist wood frame covered in genuine white gold.

CORAL PILLARS IN LAGOON OF MARAA, Tahiti, depth of 20 feet, 1943
By Zarh Pritchard
Located in Spokane, WA
Measures Painting 7.125 x 10.75 inches Framed 14 x 18.75 inches Zarh Pritchard (1866–1956) was an artist known for his ethereal and atmospheric paintings, particularly of underwater scenes, which he actually painted underwater in what is now considered primitive diving gear or early scuba diving equipment. His work often depicted dreamlike, almost mystical landscapes with a soft, hazy quality. This painting of coral caverns showcases a delicate, misty effect of gorgeous pastel colors, which aligns with Pritchard’s style. He used a diving helmet and gear to actually paint underwater on leather, creating the most unusual and evocative impressionist paintings, unparalleled in art history. This painting retains a hand made wood frame covered in 23k gold by famed Los Angeles framer...

One of a Kind
By Doug Smith
Located in Napa, CA
ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens is delighted to unveil the newest paintings by California landscape painter, Doug Smith. Known for his unique depictions of agrarian landscapes, Smith has long been fascinated by the vast mosaics of the archetypal American West. The inspired, stunning paintings blend aerial landscapes, Smith’s experience in graphic design, and a traditional detailed vignette showing a peek into pastoral American life. With vivid planes of color and an attention to refined geometric composition, Smith’s paintings are an intimate mix between abstract expressionism and a small dash of realistic landscape painting, inspired by long flights over the country and even longer drives through it. The inclusion of weathered barns...
