Phil Latimer Dike (1906–1990) was a prominent American painter and art educator, renowned for his contributions to the California watercolor movement. Born in Redlands, California, Dike developed an early interest in art, leading him to study at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1924 to 1927. He furthered his education at the Art Students League in New York City, where he studied under notable artists such as George Bridgman, Frank Vincent DuMond, and George Luks. Dike's artistic journey included a period in France at the American Academy in Fontainebleau, where he absorbed European modernist influences. Upon returning to California, he became a pivotal figure in the development of the "California Style" of watercolor painting, characterized by vibrant, expressive depictions of the state's landscapes and coastal scenes.
In addition to his painting career, Dike played a significant role in art education. He taught at institutions such as the Chouinard Art Institute, the Claremont Graduate School, and Scripps College, influencing a generation of artists with his innovative approaches to watercolor techniques. Dike's works have been exhibited in prestigious institutions and are part of collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Library of Congress. His legacy continues to be celebrated for its contribution to American art and the distinct California watercolor movement. The work presented here though unsigned, was exhibited at the Palisades Art Center in Pacific Palisades, California c. 1955. It’s wonderful abstraction of the Santa Monica Mountains with dwellings hugging the foothills below give a sense of drama and grandeur to this fabled part of the California coastline. It retains a handmade modernist wood frame covered in genuine white gold.
