About the Item

Signed lower left with monogram for Albert Sebastian Oesch (Swiss, 1893-1920) and dated 1919; additionally signed, verso, 'Ab. Oesch', dated, and titled, 'Appenzell'. Albert Sebastian Oesch (1897–1973) stands as a key Swiss modernist whose art bridged academic rigor with the innovations of the European avant-garde. Trained first at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, he continued at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich under Carl von Marr and Franz von Stuck, acquiring a foundation in classical draftsmanship even as Expressionist ideas were begfinning to press upon the Munich school. In 1920, he moved to Paris, enrolling at the Académie Julian and briefly at the Académie Colarossi, where he encountered the Fauves and Cubists, expanding his chromatic range and experimenting with fractured structure. His public debut came at the Salon d’Automne of 1923, closely followed his first exhibition the Salon des Indépendants of 1924. He subsequently traveled in Italy where the frescoes of Giotto and the painters of the trecento combined with the chromatic harmonies of Venice deepened his objective synthesis of past and present. Returning to Switzerland at the close of the 1920s, Oesch established a Basel studio and exhibited at the Kunsthalle Basel (1929) and Zurich Kunsthaus (1931), earning recognition as both painter and cultural interlocutor. His luminous landscapes and still lifes, balancing crystalline form with lyrical color, earned him membership in the Schweizerische Gesellschaft bildender Künstler and regular national showings. Retrospectives in Basel (1955) and Zurich (1962) confirmed his stature, his works entering Swiss museum collections and securing his reputation as a painter of enduring resonance. E.
