An original oil portrait of a cavalier by highly regarded French artist Alex De Andreis (1871 – 1939). This beautiful painting is an excellent example of Alex De Andreis portrait work depicting the artist’s favorite subject – that of a Cavalier The artist signature is in the bottom right corner Dimensions: 31.0″ W x 38.0″ H x 2.0″ D The canvas is presented in a gilt applique frame with a name plaque on the center. Condition: Very Good. Wear customary for age. Painting has undergone some restoration. Has craquelure with little to no paint loss. Has some stretcher bar indention's. Alex de Andreis was a French painter of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Andreis’ subjects were mostly genre pieces set in 17th and 18th Century costumes similar to those of Stephen Lewin. His broad confident technique, which captures beautifully the play of light upon his images, is an interpretation that is highly original. Both the color and atmosphere of his canvases come alive, giving his figures a natural environment in which to cast their spell. Whether tavern interiors, figures playing chess or cavaliers admiring a new acquisition, Alex de Andreis fires the imagination with his images of a bygone age and presents us with highly decorative images which in today’s market, as in the artist’s day, are very collectible. Alex de Andreis’ career began as a soldier in the service of the Swedish and later of the Spanish crown. As a painter he established himself with his costume paintings illustrating romanticizing tendencies, as well as scenes from the military life in the tradition of François Roybet. Andreis’ paintings are owned and displayed by numerous large museums, and have been sold by world famous auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams, Fernando Duran, DuMouchelles Auction House, Pays de Fayence Enchères –Estimations, Brunk Auctions, Heritage, among others.
