Alexey Mandych (1973) - artist and photographer, graduated from Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in 2011 and Geographical department MSU in 1999 in Moscow. Since 2016 Mandych has been a professor in the Contemporary Art course at the British Higher School of Art and Design (Moscow School of Contemporary Art) in Moscow. Lives and works in Moscow.
The Constellation 3691 painting is part of the “Make Light Of It” project devoted to the contradiction between both the triviality and the impossibility of the idea of death in society, where the terms “death” and “illness” are taboo. The artist blurs the insects using the eastern technique of finger drawing. The continuous application of paint from dark to light creates volume and depth and emphasises the artist’s idea of opposition between light and darkness.
In this project, the author refers to the contradiction of banality and the impossibility of accepting death in society, where the concepts of “death” and, “disease” as a forbearer are taboo for members of society and are not applicable to creatures around.
“Sometimes it seems to me that the most incredible is hidden behind the banality. In place of rubbed calluses, commonplaces and boredom, a true understanding of this world is clamped. That corner where everything uncomfortable, uncomfortable, not amenable”, Alexey Mandych comments on his works.
