17th century Portrait of the Spanish noblewoman Anna Maria de Camudio

C. 1630s

About the Item

Portrait of Anna Maria de Camudio, Spanish noblewoman and lady-in-waiting to Infanta Isabella Attributed to the Studio of Anthony van Dyck, c. 1630 This finely preserved 17th-century portrait presents Anna Maria de Camudio, a Spanish noblewoman of Basque origin, daughter of Don Pedro Velasques de Camudio and Doña Maria de los Rios y Alarcón. Born at the end of the 16th century, she became a lady-in-waiting at the influential Brussels court of Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of Philip II of Spain and one of the most powerful female rulers of her time. Isabella, the daughter of Philip II of Spain, governed the Spanish Netherlands with her husband Archduke Albert of Austria, and later as a widow. Her court in Brussels was not only a vital political center but also a renowned artistic hub. The Infanta cultivated close relationships with some of the greatest artists of the era, most notably Peter Paul Rubens, who served as her court painter and diplomatic envoy. She also offered patronage and access to Anthony van Dyck, who rose to fame in the Southern Netherlands before becoming court painter to Charles I in England. To be part of Isabella’s inner circle was to live at the cultural heart of early Baroque Europe; surrounded by painters, scholars, statesmen, and musicians. This was the world in which Anna Maria de Camudio came of age, married, and moved with grace and status. In 1607 Anna Maria married Ferdinand de Boisschot, Count of Erps and Baron of Zaventem, a respected diplomat and Chancellor of Brabant who was well connected with the artistic elite of his day. He maintained close ties with Anthony van Dyck, and is believed to have commissioned several portraits by the artist; including full-length depictions of both himself and Anna Maria. Our sitter lived a long and likely very interesting life, passing away in 1663, fourteen years after her husband’s death. Our portrait also invites reflection: what stories might Anna Maria have shared, having witnessed the political intricacies and artistic achievements of one of the most sophisticated courts of her time? In its quiet elegance, this portrait reflects echoes of those experiences. Artistic Attribution and IRR Findings This painting is carefully attributed to the studio of Van Dyck, based on stylistic elements and technical examination. Infrared reflectography (IRR) has revealed significant compositional changes, including a revised collar, originally a large mill-stone type, later replaced with a more modern flat lace collar. This change mirrors the full-length portrait of Anna Maria by Van Dyck, long held in the collection of the Dukes of Arenberg, and recorded in several historical sources. While our version closely follows the composition of that full-length painting, it features slight variations, such as in the jewellery. Provenance - Private collection, United Kingdom - Background was overpainted in black in earlier restoration, now sensitively corrected - Compositionally linked to Van Dyck’s full-length portrait of the sitter in the Arenberg collection Dimensions *The oil on canvas laid on board measures ca. 77 × 64 cm *With its custom-made contemporary frame ca. 96 × 82.5 cm Literature related to our portrait - Van Dyck, Erik Larsen, Luca-Verlag, 1988 (full-length portrait under No. 484) - Guide Théorique et Pratique de l’Amateur de Tableaux, Théodore Lejeune, p. 363 - Annales de l’Académie Royale d’Archéologie de Belgique, Vol. L, 4th series, Tome X, Anvers, 1897, pp. 265–292 What makes this work unique? This portrait stands as a compelling testament to the legacy of a woman whose life intersected with diplomacy, nobility, and one of the most artistically rich courts in Europe. A work of refined beauty and subtle historical resonance, which comes with intriguing IRR images, revealing hidden layers of history.

Large 17th century religious family painting - Mary with Christ and Anna
Located in Aartselaar, BE
17th century Old Master painting depicting the Infant Christ with Mary and St. Anne attributed to Nicolas de Liemaker The artist of the present work wonderfully captured the loving gaze of Maria, looking in awe at her child. One can sense the tenderness and love in her eyes. The eyes of Christ appears to be filled with wisdom and love and a finely painted aura crowns his and his mother's heads. St. Anne, Mary's mother, gently holds the infant whilst gazing adoringly at him. The painting is not only a beautiful depiction of Christ and his mother and grandmother, but also a sweet image of the tender bond between a mother's and their children. The vibrant and soft colours of the fabric create a soft cocoon around the figures and seem to further emphasis the beauty and importance of the depicted scenery and its protagonists. Nicolaas de Liemaecker (also spelled as Liemaker or Liemackere) was a Flemish painter born in Ghent in 1601. He was also known under the name Nicolaas Roose. His father was Jacobus de Liemaecker, a painter upon glass. Nicolaas is reported to have been trained by his father and Gaspard de Crayer II (1), an apprenticeship with Otto Van Veen has also been suggested. In 1624 he worked at the Court of the Bishop of Paderborn and for Ferdinand of Bavaria. He later returned to his native city, where he focused on religious and historical paintings. He was a very accomplished and celebrated artist who attained a high rank in his profession. He witnessed the baptisms of Pieter and Janne-Marie Van Hulle...
