About the Item
Polish oil painting of Jewish men studying by Arthur Bryks
Polish, c. 1925-30
Frame: Height 108cm, width 89.5cm, depth 5cm
Canvas: Height 93cm, width 74.5cm
Painted by the Polish artist Arthur Bryks, this work depicts five males seated around an open book. The pictorial emphasis is on their heads, the five of which transcribe a circular arrangement in the composition. The faces of the figures, wizened with age, study the open book—most likely the Torah—their countenances evincing deep contemplation. Bryks has utilised dark colours, the effect of which is to emphasise the meditative mood of the work. The painting is held, unglazed, by a giltwood frame. The painting is signed ‘ABryks’ and is inscribed on the reverse with ‘ABryks 1925-1930’ and a note to indicate the work belonged to one Henri Suter Carrara.

Large Watercolour Painting Depicting Turkish Scholars by A. Rosati
Located in London, GB
Large watercolour painting depicting Turkish scholars by A. Rosati
Italian, Early 20th Century
Panel: Height 36cm, width 52cm
Frame: Height 72cm, width 89cm, depth 4.5cm
This sensational watercolour painting depicts two Turkish scholars, who recline in a typical Orientalist interior as they study and discuss the Quran. The figures are beautifully rendered in a sketched, painterly style that harks back to Impressionism, dressed in bright Orientalist robes with ornate detailing. The two men are imbued with contrasting characters, the left-hand figure engaged and leaning forward in discussion, whilst the right reclines in thought.
Their setting is marked with Orientalist signifiers, such as the incense lamp and palm plant in the top right-hand corner. Particularly fine detail has been given to the Persian-style rug, which catches the viewer’s eye with its vibrant hues and repeating geometric motif border. Further geometric designs can be seen on the back wall, which utilises circular and zig-zag mosaic patterning. These motifs are replicated in the beautiful frame. A later addition, the frame complements not only the colour palette of the painting with a bright red base, but also the intricate motifs of the painting with gilt foliate decoration.
The painting is by the Italian artist Alberto Rosati...

Rare Judaica Art. Jewish genre scene. In the tradition of Moritz Oppenheim, Isidor Kauffman and Maurycy Gottlieb and later of Tully Filmus, Zalman Kleinman and Itshak Holtz the artist captures this Jewish scene with a particular sensitivity. Part of the Ecole De Paris The term "School of Paris" was used in 1925 by André Warnod (fr) to refer to the many foreign-born artists who had migrated to Paris.
School of Paris artists were progressively marginalized. Beginning in 1935 art publications no longer wrote about Marc Chagall, just magazines for Jewish audiences, and by June 1940 when the Vichy government took power, School of Paris artists could no longer exhibit in Paris at all.
The artists working in Paris between World War I and World War II experimented with various styles including Cubism, Orphism, Surrealism and Dada. Foreign and French artists working in Paris included Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Constantin Brâncuși, Raoul Dufy, Tsuguharu Foujita, artists from Belarus like Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, and Jacques Lipchitz, the Polish artist Marek Szwarc and others such as Russian-born prince Alexis Arapoff. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The "core members were almost all Jews, and the resentment expressed toward them by French critics in the 1930s was unquestionably fueled by anti-Semitism." One account points to the 1924 Salon des Indépendants, which decided to separate the works of French-born artists from those by immigrants; in response critic Roger Allard (fr) referred to them as the School of Paris. Jewish members of the group included Emmanuel Mané-Katz, Chaim Soutine, Adolphe Féder, Chagall, Moïse Kisling, Maxa Nordau...
