About the Item

"Gazing Through Ankara" is a captivating series of paintings that celebrates the beauty, diversity, and individuality of black African women through the exploration of eyewear and Ankara fabric. Each painting depicts a black African woman wearing unique glasses intricately designed using vibrant Ankara fabric. What makes these pieces truly remarkable is that the glasses and the fabric worn by each woman perfectly match, creating a harmonious fusion of fashion and identity. The series showcases the power of eyewear as a transformative accessory, reflecting the wearer's personality, confidence, and style. The Ankara fabric used in the glasses design is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of Africa, specifically highlighting the beauty of the continent's vibrant patterns, colors, and motifs. The paintings capture the essence of self-assuredness, elegance, and individuality, as the women confidently don their Ankara glasses. "Gazing Through Ankara" invites the viewer to explore the intersection of fashion, culture, and personal identity. It celebrates the beauty of diversity and emphasizes the importance of self-expression, empowering black African women to embrace their heritage and unique sense of style. The series serves as a visual narrative that encourages viewers to reflect on their own cultural identity and how fashion can be a powerful form of self-expression and connection. It is situated on high hills, from where broad Bruegelian vistas are open. The uneven terrain with significant differences of high and low; a canal between the Moskva river and the Volga; small rivers, woods and villages; a nearby ancient town of Dmitrov, which is equal to Moscow in age; ships cruising the canal and trains outdistancing them – all this I saw from my window since my early years. It was a view that embraced all the diversity of the world. This is why I can say that the impressions of my childhood and youth – beautiful nature and remarkable people – are the most important ones. In the museum of Moscow's St. Andronic Monastery I copied the best examples of the old Russian painting of the 15th-17th centuries. My own style evolved from the ancient icon...
