Ben Snijders (Almelo, the Netherlands, 1943)
is one of the doyens of contemporary Northern Dutch still life painting. He trained at the Minerva Academy in Groningen and subsequently developed a style that, despite the rich Dutch tradition, occupies a unique position. Although fundamentally realistic, the painterly style in significant parts of Snijders' paintings tends towards a more impressionistic view. In addition to many shades of blue, numerous tones of white, off-white, and brown form the essence of his palette. Only occasionally does something red break through this meditative concentration of austerity. There is no doubt that Ben Snijders, like no other, is able to compose still lifes in his characteristic idiom, which, in addition to what good still lifes require, also contain other components of painting. One of these is the special way in which he uses the color blue. In different tones, in different shades, in harmonious interplay with the compositional structure of the objects, including many bottles, but also painted in such a way—and placed so dominantly in the space—that the abstract quality of the painting becomes at least as important. Like tranquil forms of human emotion, actually more turbulent than one ever finds in a still life. The painting goes even further, in which the abstract blue is articulated into an image again: on a blue background, one sees a blue postcard, with an impressive blue wave, accentuating the silence of the Still Life.
