About the Item
A contemporary oil on linen board portrait of Cora, part of a series of portraits: 'Portrait in Landscape' by the Dutch artist Bernadette 'Berna' Van Baarsen. The painting is signed bottom left, titled to the backboard and is presented in a modern gilt frame.
This is one from Berna's latest collection of paintings consisting of 12 portraits. In them, every personage finds an echo from the surrounding nature, either through a dialogue of colours, or by referencing or contrasting shapes. Van Baarsen was inspired whilst attending a birthday party in Provence, South of France, to create this series of portraits of her fellow guests. It was a very sunny day and everybody took it in turns to wear a large stylish sun hat and that proved the catalyst for this portrait and the collection, capturing the character of the sitter but also the joy and conviviality of the moment. The perfect portrait.

Bernadette (‘Berna’, as she autographs her works) VAN BAARSEN was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing her high-school she followed trainings for nurse and architect, whilst at the same time being a lead singer in two Dutch punk bands and making sculptures in plexiglass. Later in life she decided to pursue an academic career and obtained a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. She worked as associate professor at the Free University of Amsterdam and was member of several high-level medical-ethical committees. In 2015 she settled in France. Being essentially autodidact, she took up painting, in particular after being inspired by the Provençal landscape and friendships with fellow artists. In recent years she has shown her work at successful exhibitions in Provence.
