A wonderful strong and colourful portrait. The subject is looking out at us with his soulful eyes. His white makeup and characteristic hairstyle contrast against his flesh tones and the vivid yellow textured background. The painting really sings and vibrates. An arresting and intriguing image inspired by Bernard Buffett's painting The Clown of 1955.
“The Clown” is one of Bernard Buffet’s most known paintings that demonstrates his skill of revealing the character’s feelings and mood through simple pictures. Painted in 1955, this tragic depiction of one isolated clown marks Buffet’s attraction to subjects of solitude and estrangement. The clown, which for ages has been linked with joy and laughter, now appears in a scene of introspection and melancholy, his downcast mouth and unfocused eyes betraying his dark thoughts.
The clown is placed against a dark background, which emphasizes his ghost-like appearance through the use of bright, sharp lines and subdued colors. Buffet’s sharp contrasts and geometrical shapes create tension, unfolding together with viewers to identify the deeper meaning behind the comic face of laughter.
