About the Item

Inspired by Italian Artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Illustrator Bernard D'Andrea creates a startled person in profile. Unlike Arcimboldo, D'Andrea constructs a girl's head out of people and demons instead of vegetables. We counted 13 people, one alligator-like creature, and one medusa-like dragon with multiple heads. There may be more to be discovered. The illustration was commissioned for a book by author Dan Morgan on aliens possessing a person's mind. "Alien powers of terrible force begin to invade the psychic domain of the psi-group. Someone had found a way to cross great distances to enter and destroy human minds. The immeasurable threat of these powers in the hands of an unknown but ruthless enemy had to be eliminated, and so deadly combat was begun for the highest of all stakes - control of the planet. But the hazardous search for the source of this lethal power led unmistakably to a sweet-natured, innocent yogi and an intelligent, confused young girl." Source: Publisher The work is signed bottom center. Frame size 26.25 x 28.75 Bernard D'Andrea was a top New York illustrator in his day and a member of the Society of Illustrators. He worked for the Saturday Evening Post for 15 years and Good Housekeeping for over 40 years. During what he calls “the glory days of illustration” and citing Saturday Evening Post covers as an inspiration, his work appeared in Boy’s Life, Redbook, Cosmopolitan, Woman’s Home Companion, McCall’s and Seventeen. For Boy’s Life, he even did an illustration for Isaac Asimov. Married to Lorraine Fox (1922 - 1976) until her death. Bio Text mostly from the Society of Illustrators site

Head of a Woman - Surrealist Drawing, Transparent Art, Contemporary Italian Art
By Angelo Canevari
Located in New York, NY
Angelo Canevari’s Head of a Woman is a 25 x 20 inch surrealist drawing made with melted polyethylene. Canevari's work is often inspired by classical themes and myths. The mythology is often re-visited through his personal memories giving shape to figures that are a combination of historical mythical characters and the imagery of his innermost self. This Head of a Woman is the perfect syncretism of this creative process: maybe the head of an ancient Mother Goddess or just a minimalistic representation of a character from Canevari's memories. The melted polyethylene used to draw the figure gives it a crystal sculptural quality of surrealistic appearance. Angelo Canevari is an Italian sculptor who comes from a long lineage of artists active in Rome since the 17th century. He has been commissioned several works by the Vatican including the Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Belluno and the Vatican Coins...
