About the Item
Bret Reilly’s “Crumpled” series seamlessly intertwines the ethereal essence of Impressionism with the dreamlike distortion of surrealism, blurring the line between canvas and sculpture. These works evoke a sense of fluidity and depth, as he masterfully captures ephemeral moments, while infusing them with a palpable, three-dimensional presence. The crumpled and torn paper surfaces seem to echo the fragility and flawed human experience of each subject, while hanging as mirrors to the viewer to reflect on their own inner and outer imperfect beauty.
From The Artist:
My Crumpled series has enabled me to bridge my two very different art worlds- sculpture and painting. These paintings begin as a sculpture- crumpling heavy watercolor paper- solidifying the back side- then, I paint. 150 hours and a thousand tiny lake shapes later, there’s a recognizable face, like Lincoln, or a complete stranger that the viewer is meeting for the first time. I believe sculpture needs to embody movement in order for it to work aesthetically. Somehow, I have achieved movement as well in these crumpled paintings. As the viewer moves around the
painting, it changes- it moves. Each piece becomes infinitely different depending on where you’re looking at it from. These works are kinetic.
The connection between sculpture and functional design is the creation of engaging objects that are fashioned to be integrated into our world rather than put on a pedestal—the chair or table or sofa that both gets us to open our eyes to possibilities as well as providing the place for us to think, react, engage and respond. Part of this evolution is the deconstruction of our environment, our living space, in order to find the beauty and function in the essential—silencing the cacophony in our world of excess. The challenge is creating originality in the objects that we collide with every day, being freed from the expectation that comfort needs to be complicated. Through simplicity we find balance between the essential and the human need for inspiration.

Never Trump
By Laura Benjamin
Located in New York, NY
Original. Part of Candy Wrapper Collage series in Pop Art style. Natural wood frame. Homage to Trump.
About the Artist:
Benjamin received her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the American University in Washington D.C. and her Master’s Degree in Art Education from New York University. In addition she received an Associate’s Degree in Textile Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and studied at The Art Student’s League, The Parson’s School of Design and The New School.
Benjamin taught art for 34 years. While on sabbatical from teaching she studied textile design. For the next 15 years she continued to teach, as well as freelance as a textile designer in both home furnishings and the apparel markets.
In the mid 90’s her focus turned towards computer graphics, and as an art educator, she incorporated this into her curriculum. She was awarded for a “successful practice in crossing the digital divide through art and technology” by the United States Department of Education.
Her early works were oils and acrylics. During the late 60’s her interest was in pure abstraction. Pop Art and the human figure began to interest her in the early 70’s. Gradually, Benjamin was drawn to experimenting with mixed media. In the 80’s there was the influence of a career in textile design that moved her towards a more decorative style.
In the 90’s, she became involved in the teaching of computer graphics. This was to have a profound influence in aiding and developing a more recent “POP” style. She began to incorporate into her paintings, torn pieces of digital printouts of her subjects.
“The part of me that is the “digital artist” became very inspired by the use of the computer as a tool with which I could manipulate my subject and its color energy. The “fine artist” in me was then able to incorporate these concepts into a new image on my canvas. Having always had an interest in mixed media, my current work is now a combination of both POP and Collage. Since 2008 I have been creating a body of work dubbed “Candy Wrapper Collage”. A juried show’s theme, “gluttony”, challenged me to ultimately explore my POP figures through a new medium….candy wrappers!
Razor blades are my new paintbrushes and candy wrappers are my new paints. Utilizing torn, cut and expired candy wrappers and their packaging, I render my subjects in diverse and colorful forms. I create representational images of celebrities and pop-culture objects...

Trump by Peter Winnett
By Peter Winnett
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia
An original contemporary art painting by Canadian artist Peter Winnett expressing the archetype of wrath. An icon of an immovable anchor of nationalism and old fashioned masculine grandiosity, Trump puts his money where his mouth is. This is the third painting in the Seven Deadly Sins series.
The painting is oil and mixed media on canvas.
Peter Winnett
Artist statement:
Brand Heresy
The first 7 paintings represent a type of cultural deconstruction. Trying to evolve the art away from conventional to a more distinctive style and create a unique hybrid. Icons, symbols and brands have been combined with a very personal process that challenges how icons are portrayed. My approach is to collide opposites, a bold contrast, creative tensions. My aim is to create passionate confrontation between my intuitive vision and the brand fodder of commercial enterprise.
This is considered a type of brand heresy.
Born in 1969, Peter Winnett developed his art approach early on. Graduating from the NSCAD art institute in Halifax in 1993, he currently resides in Yaletown, Vancouver, with international clients in New York, London, San Francisco and elsewhere.
