Died in Paris in 1907. Genre, landscape, marine painter. Classical period (1845-1865) Charles Pécrus had to earn his living early, working in the Ponts-et-Chaussées in Paris. His gifts for drawing then allowed him to follow the courses of the School of Fine Arts, where he had masters "genre" painters, such as Benjamin Eugène Fichel (1826-1895). He goes to the Louvre to copy the great classical painters. It is with genre scenes that he began to exhibit at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1857. In 1865, his shipment to the Salon, "The Day after the Wedding," is purchased by Emperor Napoleon III. The precision of his drawing, the accuracy of its tones, the grace of the attitudes of his characters can compete with the qualities of the greatest Flemish and French painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, from whom he is obviously inspired, but in an original way. Transitional period: outdoor painting (1865-1885) From 1865, the neighborhood of Eugène Boudin, rue Fontaine in Paris, perhaps explains the friendship that will bind them and the new interest of Pécrus for outdoor painting and marines. The attendance of Jongkind also contributes to this evolution, more marked after 1870. Pécrus will paint on the Normandy coast, in the region of Barbizon, on the Mediterranean, in Venice, in Holland. He sometimes paints the same subjects or the same sites as Boudin, but his way is very different (less wide panoramas, less choppy touch), and is closer to that of Jongkind. Impressionist period (1885-1907) Around 1885 he almost entirely abandoned genre painting. Under the influence of the Impressionists, his manner becomes freer (less clearly defined contours, use of separate spots of color), without sacrificing nevertheless the accuracy of the drawing, the correctness of the tones, nor the elegance of the composition. He exhibited at the Salon for the last time in 1905 and continued to paint until his death, in 1907, after an existence of modest labor which, apart from the coteries and schools, simply allowed him to earn a living, in the absence of fame.
