About the Item

This expressive, figurative portrait is by Cliffton Peacock (1953-). The painting measures 40 x 34 inches (42 x 36 inches framed.) It is composed of oil on canvas. The painting is signed and dated (1991) on the reverse. As well, there is a gallery label from Obelisk Gallery in Boston on the reverse. The frame is a wood floating frame that works very well with the painting. The painting and frame are in very good condition. Peacock received his M.F.A. degree from Boston University in 1977 where he studied with James Weeks, John Wilson and Philip Guston. He has received numerous distinctive awards, including three National Endowment for the Arts grants, three Massachusetts Artist Fellowship awards, an Englehard Foundation grant, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Fellowship, and Awards in the Visual Arts grants, sponsored by the Equitable Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, the Prix de Rome from the American Academy in Rome, a South Carolina Individual Artist Fellowship, and most recently, a 2001 fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation. His work is in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Hood Museum of Art, among others. He has been an Associate Professor of Fine Arts at the College of Charleston since 1996. Source: Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, Charleston, SC Excerpted from Anna Wilson Lloyd’s review of Peacock’s work in Art in America June 4, 2010 - “…Peacock’s minor-keyed palette and dissipating faces may also remind some of Luc Tuymans’s wan, mediated images. More to the point is that Peacock, born in Chicago in 1953, studied with Philip Guston at Boston University in the 1970s. The faces he portrays are more likely conjured from shadows swirling through his own imagination than arrived at from studying light effects or appropriated images.”

This artwork "Coastal Landscape" 1961 by noted Cincinnati artist Albert Berne, 1877-1973 is an oil painting on canvas board. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. The canvas board size is 16 x 20 inches, framed is 26 x 21.5 inches. The artwork is in very good condition, the frame is in fair condition, it has been unprofessionally restored and has scratches. About the artist. Albert Berne (German/American 1877-1973) Schooled in music at the Cincinnati Conservatory, Berne studied piano in Berlin, Germany with Arthur Rubinstein. Mother and Child
Located in San Francisco, CA
This modern mid-century composition of mother and child is by Fernando Oramas (1925-2016.) It is an interesting composition, with the mother in side profile and her child staring ahead at the viewer. The painting is composed of oil on canvas and measures 18” x 14” (24” x 20” framed). It is signed in the lower right. On the reverse is Oramas’ name and address in Mexico. Oramas lived in Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s and this painting appears to date from that time, based on the style and the frame. The painting is in very good condition. The distressed wood frame goes very well with the painting. It is in fair to good condition, with some light scuffs on the edges that allow the wood color to show through the grey stain of the frame as well as a very small bit of separation between the pieces of the frame. Please look at the signature photo for a good image of a section of the frame. Oramas had a major exhibition of his work in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2016. Oramas studied at the School of Fine Arts of the National University, located in the old convent of Santa Clara, in the Center of Bogotá, where he met teachers, trained in renowned academies in Europe. Invitation to the Paradise #11
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Sakurai Takami - Japanese (1928-2016) Title: Invitation to the Paradise ST#11 Year: circa 1972 Medium: Oil on Canvas Sight size: 18 x 24 inches. Framed size: 21 x 27 inches Signature: Unsigned. Label on old frame Condition: Very good Frame: Framed in original frame. Frame in poor condition This oil on canvas is by the noted avant garde Japanese artist Sakurai Takami (1928-2016). It was created sometime between 1971, when Takami lived in San Francisco and was a member of and exhibited with the “Konnyaku Commune” and 1978 when he exhibited with the Vorpal Gallery in San Francisco. This painting was purchased from the Vorpal Gallery. The painting is in very good condition. It is unsigned, but the title is on the side of the metal frame. The frame is fine, but the mat is stained and in poor condition. I will include the frame for protection and provenance. Sakurai was a main member of the avant-garde art group “Kyushu-ha”. Kyushu-ha” created a major trend among contemporary art in post-war Japan, which spread from Fukuoka to the whole country and also France, the United States and other overseas countries. Throughout his life he was very dramatic; his enormous and diverse works are energetic and face us with the true meaning of expression. Initially his main focus was on informal paintings, but it gradually expanded towards anti-artistic objects and performances. His works are characterized by the usage of materials that are connected with the smell of a workers life, such as coal tar, asphalt, woven mats and dungarees (jute bag). Shortly after Kyushu-ha disbanded in 1968, Sakurai Takami moved to San Francisco. From 1973 onward, he lived in France. The people and faces in Sakurai’s paintings are coloured red, so that the colour, a symbol of heat, becomes a “social sign”. Each person has a life of their own, while at the same time expressing the colourful life of human communities, like the hippies. His theme may be drawing “humanity and the universe” with a loving embrace of “peace” and “life”. 1953 graduated Fukuoka Liberal Arts University 1955 40th Nika Art Exhibition, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 1956 Persona Exhibition, outer west side of the Fukuoka prefectural office 1957-68 part of Kyushu-ha 1965 went to the United States (~’67) 1970 “Kanousei e no Ishi“ Kitakyushu Hachiman Museum of Art Kyushu: Trends in Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition, Fukuoka Bunka Hall Sakurai Takami solo exhibition, Fukuoka Bunka Hall went to the United States for the second time, started working with the konyaku commune (San Francisco) 1971 Konyaku Revolution Art Exhibition (San Francisco) 1973 Nagoya mayor nominating election convention, Azabu public hall moved to France 1974 formed the group “Kusuguri” (Paris) 1975 7th...
