Colbert Cassan (1899-1979) was a French artist known for his vibrant and detailed paintings. Born in Montbrun-les-Bains, Drôme, Cassan moved to Avignon with his family in 1904, where he studied at the School of Music and the School of Fine Arts. He achieved early success in both fields, winning the 1st Prize for violin in 1913 and the 1st Prize for drawing and wash in 1914. Despite his artistic talents, Cassan chose to teach and spent 37 years as a teacher at the Lycée Frédéric Mistral in Avignon.
Cassan was deeply involved in the cultural life of Avignon, giving lectures on famous musicians and painters, and serving as an artistic advisor. He was also the Principal Violin of the Avignon Opera orchestra and had a passion for jazz, forming an orchestra named Bambalina's Jazz. His love for opera took him to many prominent European cities to attend performances.
As a painter, Cassan often focused on portraits of musicians and landscapes, capturing scenes with a modern touch. He painted primarily for personal pleasure and did not exhibit his works widely during his lifetime. Notable pieces include views of cities like Lucerne and Toledo, showcasing his ability to depict detailed and original perspectives.
