Créqule
La Masque Africain, Hommage to Picasso and the European Modernists.

Late 20th Century

About the Item

Acrylic and oil on board in the modern form of a stylised African mask on a stand by French artist Créqule. Signed bottom right. The painting is presented in a plain wood frame, under glass. Very modern in style with its flat planes and bold colours this painting is a refreshing take on the depiction of an African portrait mask in a strong statement of the portrayal of the facial features. The way the colours are patchworked is reminiscent of the harlequin pattern, a theme which was made very prominent by artists such as Picasso and André l'Hôte. The distinct fields of colour also hark back to the colour field style employed by Nicolas de Staël. All these elements give us the impression of a picture painted in the 1950s ( mid-century ). Modern in style with elements of abstract geometric, this painting has it all. Créqule is a Provencal artist currently working in Saint Maxime on the Côte d'Azur just across the bay from St. Tropez. It was during a visit to the Musée d’Ethnographie in Paris that Pablo Picasso became so moved by the shapes, lines, and angles of the African masks that he famously declared that he learned what painting is really about. “It was rather not only a formal matter for Picasso, it was also a spiritual matter for him,” explains the art critic Hans-Peter Wipplinger. The influence of so-called “primitive” art on European modernist artists like Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Klee, Max Ernst can not be overstated. All were inspired by and collected for themselves these wonderful objects.

18th Century Oil on Canvas Portrait, Major Alexander Brown in Military Uniform.
By Sir David Wilkie
Located in Cotignac, FR
18th Century Military portrait of a young officer in Napoleonic period military dress. The painting is not signed but the subject is Major Alexander Brown. The work is oil on canvas later mounted on board and presented in a fine 'Regence style' carved gilt frame. There are labels to the back referring to the subject, 'Major Brown of Trinity' and a framers trade label from Edinburgh. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a young military officer in the prime of his life. His red uniform adorned with fine buttons, fringed epaulettes and high gilt collar. His ruddy complexion offset by his stylish hair, a quiff and swept forward to the sides as was the fashion at the time. Sir David Wilkie RA (18 November 1785 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish painter, especially known for his portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. Sir David Wilkie was actually admitted in 1799 (despite only being 14) through the influence of the Earl of Leven...

Promenade by Grégoire Mathias – Geometric Cubist Composition in Earth Tones
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Promenade Acrylic on wood 33.1 x 21.8 cm A compact yet striking cubist composition by French artist Grégoire Mathias, “Promenade” explores human figures through layered geometries and rich earth tones. “Promenade” is a refined, vertically oriented work in acrylic on wood panel by French artist Greg Mathias, a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism—an evolution of Cubism that doesn’t just fragment space, but also folds multiple moments in time into a single frame. In this composition, a solitary figure appears mid-step, portrayed through overlapping forms that subtly shift in posture and position, evoking successive instants of the same walk. Using a palette of earthy ochres, rose-beige tones, slate blues, and deep browns, Mathias blends geometric abstraction with temporal movement. The fractured background enhances the impression of both forward motion and layered time, suggesting the silent passage of moments within a single contemplative scene. Unlike traditional Analytical Cubism, which reduces forms to a still, spatial analysis, this piece embodies motion and transformation—hallmarks of the artist’s unique visual language. Compact in size but conceptually expansive, “Promenade” invites the viewer to witness the echo of steps already taken and those just about to occur. Perfect For: Interior designers sourcing vertical wall art...

"Ray of Hope" presents a compelling visual narrative that captures the viewer's attention with its elegant simplicity and emotive composition. The central focus is a lady, her eyes fixed on an unseen point, her hands gently supporting her face, and her flowing braided hair cascading down her shoulders. The artist skillfully employs light and shadow to accentuate the contours of her face, creating an ethereal glow that emanates from her serene expression. The painting's colors, a delicate blend of cool and warm tones, add a sense of depth and richness, further enhancing the artwork's emotional impact. The lady's introspective pose and piercing gaze offer a profound glimpse into the human experience. With her hands gently cradling her face, she exudes a sense of vulnerability and introspection, as if lost in her own thoughts and dreams. The flowing braided hair adds an element of timelessness and femininity, while also symbolizing the fluidity and interconnectedness of one's hopes and aspirations. "Ray of Hope" serves as a reminder that within the depths of contemplation, a spark of optimism and resilience can emerge, guiding individuals toward a brighter future. "Ray of Hope" finds its place within John Alogi's wider body of work, the "Dreams and Reality" series. This series explores the intersection between the subconscious and conscious mind, delving into the depths of human emotions, dreams, and aspirations. Each artwork within this collection invites viewers to question the boundaries between reality and imagination, offering glimpses into alternate worlds and unseen narratives. Alogi's unique ability to blend symbolism with evocative imagery gives birth to visual masterpieces that resonate with viewers on both intellectual and emotional levels. Alogi's artistic style is characterized by a delicate balance between realism and poetic abstraction. His meticulous attention to detail, particularly in capturing facial expressions and the intricacies of hair, results in a stunning portrayal of human emotion. The artist's use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and luminosity that brings his subjects to life. Alogi's choice of colors, often muted and harmonious, adds to the dreamlike quality of his artwork, enveloping viewers in a world of contemplation and introspection. John Alogi's artwork, "Ray of Hope," captivates viewers with its mesmerizing portrayal of a lady lost in thought. As a part of his "Dreams and Reality" series, this masterpiece reflects the artist's profound understanding of the human condition, evoking a sense of introspection and emotional resonance.
