About the Item

David Rolt was British society portrait painter who enjoyed great success as an artist, and endured a very interesting and complex life. Rolt was partially crippled at birth when the misuse of forceps used during his delivery damaged his skull and left him with lifelong disability in his right arm and leg. In his early twenties, Rolt formed a relationship with Mel Russell-Cooke, the daughter of the captain of the Titanic. Russel-Cooke was a spirited woman who drove fast cars, and held a pilot’s license. She was 18 years older than Rolt and married, but the two formed a relationship that lasted for almost 20 years. In 1959 Rolt was introduced to Penelope “Minnie” Bradford, who was more than 20 years younger than Rolt. Within weeks the two were married. Rolt and Bradford had two children together, but ended up divorcing after 10 year. Rolt died in during a surgery that was intended to alleviate years of severe pain caused by the disabilities he had suffered from birth. During his life, Rolt was one of the most sought-after British portrait and landscape painters. In the 1940s Rolt’s works were being shown at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club. Leading London gallerist Sir Jack Baer staged five exhibitions of Rolt’s work at the Hazlitt Gallery between 1949 and 1957. Later Rolt’s works were shown in international exhibitions, including New York, Cape Town, South Africa, and Istanbul, Turkey. As a society portrait painter, Rolt’s sitters included many celebrated figures in British society including Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris, the magnate Nubar Gulbenkian, the politician and writer Harold Nicolson, Viola Duchess of Westminster, and actress Valerie Hobson. This colorful portrait is of Baron Audley, circa 1940.

Mother and Child
Located in San Francisco, CA
This modern mid-century composition of mother and child is by Fernando Oramas (1925-2016.) It is an interesting composition, with the mother in side profile and her child staring ahead at the viewer. The painting is composed of oil on canvas and measures 18” x 14” (24” x 20” framed). It is signed in the lower right. On the reverse is Oramas’ name and address in Mexico. Oramas lived in Mexico in the 1950s and 1960s and this painting appears to date from that time, based on the style and the frame. The painting is in very good condition. The distressed wood frame goes very well with the painting. It is in fair to good condition, with some light scuffs on the edges that allow the wood color to show through the grey stain of the frame as well as a very small bit of separation between the pieces of the frame. Please look at the signature photo for a good image of a section of the frame. Oramas had a major exhibition of his work in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2016. Oramas studied at the School of Fine Arts of the National University, located in the old convent of Santa Clara, in the Center of Bogotá, where he met teachers, trained in renowned academies in Europe. Ignacio Gómez...
