About the Item
This is a striking portrait painting of a gentleman, possibly a self portrait by the artist Dunbar Dyson Beck.
Beck was a painter, muralist, teacher, interior designer and educator.
Beck earned BFA from Yale University, and soon after won the prestigious Prix de Rome award for his painting 'Adoration'.
He study in Europe at the American Academy in Rome for three years. Beck returned to the US and taught at Columbia University, and Cooper Union in New York. During the 1930s and 1940s Beck was commissioned to created murals, including Radio City Music Hall, New York, and St. Roses' Chapel in Sacramento, California.
He also created a frieze for the case of a Steinway concert grand piano that was given to the White House by Steinway & Sons. The piano still remains in the White House.
Beck spent much of his time travel between California and New York, and exhibited his work across the country.
This work is a striking portrait painting of a gentleman, possible a self portrait.
It is oil on stretched canvas, and is housed in a vintage frame.
