Ellsworth Woodward
Portrait of a Lady (by leader of "Southern Art Renaissance") - 20th Century

c. 1905

About the Item

Many of you clicking on this watercolor are probably doing so because you know of Ellsworth Woodward, who with his brother William Woodward around the turn of the 20th century sparked an arts renaissance in the South, the arts and culture in general having been mostly moribund since the dispiriting defeat experienced in the Civil War. I won't bog you down with lots of detail here since all you have to do is Google his name to bring up a wealth of information about him. He is most famous for his leadership of the arts program at Newcomb College in New Orleans, and its famous Newcomb Pottery (these ceramics now bring thousands of dollars - I have two of them in my inventory). This watercolor is apparently from a sketchbook, and is on paper mounted on cardboard. You can either trim the edges and frame it at a conventional size, or "float-frame" it keeping the edges intact if you like the aged appearance. The painting is not in pristine form - you can see in the photos the little flaws here and there. But there is nothing really distracting, or DEtracting from the beauty of this portrait. Own a piece of American history! Proudly presented by Guy Lyman Fine Art, New Orleans, with our firm guarantee of satisfaction.

  • Daydream (WPA Era Oil Painting on Canvas)
    Located in New Orleans, LA
What is she dreaming about? Something in the book that is open in front of her? And who are the other characters in this moody, quiet, lovely scene? Not only a wonderful painting, but really captures that WPA period feel. A pensive painting sure to bring you peace. With frame it measures 33" x 27"; canvas measures 30" x 24". Frame has some weathering (probably original) but is still serviceable. The following is some bio information about the artist I pulled from AskArt: "Born in Swerzen, Russia, Bernard Green came to the US at a young age and settled in the New York City area. He studied art at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, the College of the City of New York and NYU, exhibiting at the NAD as early as 1910, where he won a prize both in 1910 and 1913, as well as at the ASL, winning another prize in 1914. Highly accomplished both as painter and etcher, Green continued exhibiting at the NAD throughout the years 1913-1946, at the Pan-Pacific Exposition in California in 1915, and at various galleries and other venues including a solo show at the Roerich Museum in 1930. His style was early 20th-century American Impressionist, and his interests covered a wide range from landscapes and still life to portraiture, including black subjects...

  • French Romantic School, 19th Century, Portrait of a man, oil on paper
    Located in Paris, FR
French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...
