The palette refers to the painter's craft, the sleeves recall work, training, the gesture in progress; and the open books, the study of previous masters but also inspiration. In the centre, the mirror reflects an anxious image of the artist, a premonition of the pictorial upheavals underway.
In this first quarter of a century, when all the ‘isms’ (Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism, etc.) followed one another and intermingled, Vidal remained the guarantor of a mastery acquired from the great painters.
